One of the most popular posts on macintoshhowto is this 6 year old article on how to clean an Apple mighty mouse. It’s had over 200 comments!

Here’s a video so you can see what it looks like.

Apple recommend rubbing a piece of paper over the top of the scroll wheel, but I find turning the mouse upside down and running it round in circles is much more effective. The paper must be new and clean. An old piece of paper doesn’t work.

I’ve been using this method 2-3 times a year for 6 years and my Apple Mighty Mouse with scrollwheel is still going strong.

These white iPhone lightning cables are the worst cables from Apple that I have experienced. I have Apple mice with USB cables that are 10 years old and still working, but I have not had a lightning cable that has lasted the year out. It’s even worse than this.  I’m moving my mouse around for a few hours day, yet my lightning cable only gets plugged in once each night to recharge. Most of the time it’s just sitting there doing nothing. Yet the white becomes brittle with age and starts to crack & peel and eventually leave the internal wire exposed. Here’s a video of how I repaired it with a cigarette lighter and some heat shrink. It’s a fairly easy and good looking repair as you can see from the photos.

If you buy and install Lion from the App Store  it downloads all 3Gigabytes from the App Store, installs Lion, then deletes the installer!  So when you go to install it on another machine it needs another 3Gigabyte download! I love the scroll wheel on top of the Apple mighty mouse, but after a while the sweat and oil on your finger combined with grit and dust clogs the whole thing up. This manifests itself in the scroll wheel not scrolling down, or up, or in worst cases, not scrolling all. Here’s how to fix the problem. Continue reading ⟩

G4 ibook motherboard fault.

There is a problem with the logic board in the Macintosh G4 ibooks. It can appear after a year or more in some machines and the symptom is that after being on for a few minutes, the screen goes black (it looks blank, but the light has gone off) , the fan turns on, and the computer freezes. You might think it is a problem with the display but it’s actually a problem with one of the chips on the main motherboard. This article describes the problem and how to repair it.

Last year I bought 5 non-working ipods from ebay and fixed up 4 of them. It was not to hard, but there was a couple of tricks. I’ve finally found some time to write up the hard bits, just in case anyone is interested, so here goes. This is not for you to try at home, lest you break your ipod! Continue reading ⟩
