Apple has introduced a ‘print’ button onto iPads, iPhones and iPods.  Unfortunately  you need a special “AirPrint” enabled printer. Thankfully there is an application called ‘Handyprint’ that allows you to print to any printer.  Here’s where to get it and how to use it.

On your iPhone at the bottom of some apps is a ‘share’ button. If you click this button you get a menu of different ways to share the content, one of these options is ‘print’ as shown below.

Share Button

Print Button

When you press the ‘Print’ button you will be given an option to choose a printer, but unless you have a special AirPrint printer’ you will see no printers here at all.  (I have a Canon IR5000, a Canon inkjet, a Xerox and a HP and none of them are AirPrint!)

If you don’t have an AirPrint printer there will be no printer here to select

STOP PRESS: Forget everything below. There’s a great new app by Samsung called “Samsung Mobile Print” and it can print to any printer on your wifi network from your iPhone without you needing to put any extra software onto your computer.
It even printed to my Xerox laser printer first try which usually is a little tricky to get going.
Just go to app store on the iPhone and search for “Samsung Mobile Print”
Thanks Bogdan for this tip.

Old article below:

If you want your non-airprint printer to appear then you can download the following free  donation ware  $5 application called ‘AirPrint Activator‘ ‘HandyPrint’ from netputing.
It’s free for 14 days then it asks for a donation of a minimum of $5. It used to be free, then it was donation ware, now it costs $5. If anyone finds a free alternative let me know.
You download it to any computer that’s attached to your printer.  Your computer acts as a bridge between your iOS device and printer.
Click here to go to the netputing page to find the latest version.  Download the little application called ‘HandyPrint’. You may then need to click on the ‘downloads’ button in the top right of Safari to find where it has been downloaded to.

Click on the ‘Show Downloads’ button to find it.

Now run HandyPrint by  double clicking the HandyPrint application.
You should get a window that looks like the one below.
Press the slider to ‘Turn On’ AirPrint.

The Printer should now appear in your iPad or iPhone printing menu!

Windows users:

There is a PC version that I’ve found but it costs $20. You can download from here:  http://www.collobos.com Anyone found a free PC version?

Printing directly from iOS without a computer:

There is an alternative way of doing this. You can an app on your iPhone or iPad that will attempt to print directly to your printer. ‘Printer pro’  in sone such app and there is a good set of instructions here.  There’s a free version that will let you see if it works here.

I am not recommending Printer Pro.  When I tried it all it printed was 11 pages of gobbledygook. Also, Printer Pro doesn’t work on some printers, and so they have released a ‘helper app’ called desktop helper which you can run on your computer. That now means you are running two apps. The good thing about handy print is that it uses the printer drivers on your computer, so if your computer can print to your printer then handy print can as well. Handyprint only costs $2 more.

Not sure what I am doing wrong. It shows up on my iPad, I print to it but nothing ever happens on the printer. Any advice?

If your computer you installed AirPrint on goes to sleep AirPrint will not activate. it seems as though the computer needs to be awake.

I have an iPhone 4S with the latest iOS (5.1.1) I have tried everything possible but this thing does not work. It just sits there and does nothing. If anyone figures out anything, please let me know at: rex.rexmano@gmail.com

  4. Bass Mule says:

Turned on printer sharing, turned on internet sharing, printer comes up on list of advertised printers, but I can’t select a printer. I’m running 10.7.4 on my mac and 5.11 on my iPhone 4.

  5. Jose says:

    Bass Mule

You do not have to select from the list of advertised printers. You iphone or
or Ipad will recognize the printer that you have. Your printer has to be on.

    Good luck.

i’m struggling here – having red round this and watched a number of youtube clips, it appears that you load the airprint activator on another device other than an ipad or iphone! am i right or am i right? this is not result for me. i was hoping to have an app on my ipad that would recognise my wireless hp photosmart printer. anyone any ideas?

  15. Monique says:

I have iPhone 4s and it just sits there when I select to download the AirPrint activator? How do I download the app?

  16. Mark Vivian says:

This is not an app that runs on iPod/iPad/iPhone. This is a free program that runs on a Mac computer. Simples. Once installed this links your i-device to your Mac to enable you to print from your i-device via your Mac. Therefore, your Mac & printer has to be turned on and not in seep mode.

  17. frank says:

    works great thx!

  18. Al says:

Thanks for the article will try it!
On an other note, I find funny people who don’t ”recommend” jailbreaking. Scaring people away from so many awesome tweaks, witch end up being implemented by Apple on subsequent ios’s , is a mystery to me. Being jailbroken is the best thing that ever happened to my phone.

If you have a Canon Printer with WIFI capabilities (mine is MX870, I use it to print anything wireless from my macbook pro), there’s an application for iPhones called Canon iEEP that lets you print pretty much anything that is on your iPhone (as long as you have it either in your photo album or you scanned something and saved it on your phone)… Its awesome and free!!

I noticed that it says that this is a 14 day trial.
    What happens after 14 days?

  31. Bill W says:

I wonder why this isn’t a standard feature for the iMac?

  32. Robert Allen says:

AirPrint Activator is called handyPrint and is not free. You get a 14 day trial then you gotta pay to play.

  33. Shirl says:

print n share is a good printing app as well, whether you have airprint or not or just want something quick and easy to use

    • Shirley says:

Hi from one Shirl to another! I have downloaded Print n Share on my 4S (iOS6.0.1) but I haven’t a clue how to connect it to my printer for use with it. My printer is an Epson DX6000 but my iMac is still running system 10.4.11. (I presume I don’t need Cloud?) I will be downloading WePrint when I get home. Any tips or advice you or the other guys might have would be greatly appreciated :)

Am I the only one who, having converted to Mac and having converted a big number of family and friends, is increasingly noticing signs of MAC power to make us captive audience hurdling us into spending and having less freedom now that Steve Jobs is gone? Is it back to the dark ages with Mac? Only a few years ago, I would also only buy HP but after loads of regular issues with HP printers/scanners converted to Canon which has been great for us. Now I wonder whether they too are being bullied by Mac? This, after struggling for yet another day to get the good MP 640 printer/scanner to respond to ANY of the various Apple machines!

  35. Christina says:

I am running OS X 10.5.8, and an IPhone 4s iOS 6.0.1. I downloaded and installed AirPrint Activator v2.0b13. I turned on printer sharing and internet sharing. AirPrint Activator sees my Canon iP1600 (not wireless, does it have to be?) BUT when I go to print from my iPhone it doesn’t find any printers. Is there a way to trouble shoot this?

  36. Sally says:

No luck printing with this at all. Have a new mac and iphone 4, phone still doesn’t find the printer.

  37. joe says:

this not free, trial version for 14 days

  38. alan parker says:

  39. Jay McFall says:

My Mac Book Pro is connected to my printer through wifi, not a hard wire connection from printer to Mac, will this set up work?

On my iPhone 4s when I went to print, it showed my printer, but I hadn’t read the rest of the page about setting up Print/Scan under Preferences and it didn’t print.

  40. ShellB says:

Got this to work in under 5 minutes! Love it! Was going to have to buy my husband a new printer for xmas to go with his iPad.

  41. Mary Kate Larson says:

How do I print on my iPad if I don’t have an air printer or a Mac ?

  43. Michael Thomas says:

This works on my New iPad but I can’t get my wife’s iPad 2 to see my printer, Brother MFC9320c. New iPad sees printer but older iPad does not.

  44. hajime says:

I will not even try to set up a printer for my apple devices! I just read about 10 comments and they all say it does not work! So im not even going to try!!!!!! HAHAHAHA……..

  45. Phil says:

CWI don’t see any comments about Brother printers MFC-495CW and/or MFC-615CW. Any suggestions? Would appreciate your help. Thanks!

  46. Jenn Indiana says:

I found an app called “Print n Share” which works ok for the pc. The drawback is that it doesn’t act as an airprinter exactly. You have to open whatever you want to print through the app itself, then print through the computer as described above for the mac. It can print webpages, email attachments, photos, screenshots – lots of things. If other apps have an “open with” feature, you can use that to open whatever you would like to print in the Print n Share app to print it. The app was around $7. Not free, but better than $20 like someone else mentioned. They seem to have really good support as well.

  47. Mick Lynch says:

Well…..if you’ve got to link to a Mac in any case, it would seem to a simple-minded soul like me that you may as well just email info from your iPhone to your own pc, and print to your already-recognised Dinosaur Inkjet from there???!!!
Anything else sounds like a pure waste of time!!!

  48. Brendan says:

iMac OS 10.6.8 wired to printer. Printer sharing enabled.

iPhone 4, iOS 5.1.1–prints perfectly from any app that offers print option.

iPad 2, iOS 6.0.1– sees the printer but won’t print to it from any app.

    Any suggestions? Thanks very much.

  49. Barbara R says:

My printer is a KODAK ESPOffice 6150 and can print wirelessly. The iphone 4S with 6.1 (10B142) and the PC is running Windows 7.

From what I have read so far I can download the App “Print n Share”. You have to open whatever you want to print through the app itself, then printer and pc needs to be on too. If other apps have an “open with” feature, you can use that to open whatever you would like to print in the Print n Share app to print it.

Is this correct and has it worked for others apart from Jenn Indiana who very kindly provided the info for PC printing.

  50. Rio says:

What’s wrong, do you need a airprint computer or somthing??? When I search for printers it dosen’t come up with anything. I made sure it was connected to the same wifi, made sure it was on and even checked if my printer was fully working.

  51. K.Woolnough says:

It only workas on quadcore Macs not on dualcore

  52. Swanie says:

Works perfectly on my i-Pad but not on my i-Pod or i-Phone. Why?

  53. Rona says:

I have an ipad 2. and a laptop. Both of them are in the same wifi. We have a wire printer it is not an airprint one. I tried to print from my laptop and it works. But when I tried to print from my ipad it doesn’t work. Whats the problem? Anyone can help me pls, Thank you.

    • Andrew says:

Rona, what sort of laptop do you have? This method will work only on a Mac. If you have a Windows laptop, you will have to look for a different solution, if one exists.

  54. Dick Farmer says:

If I connect my HP Officejet 7700 to my Airport Extreme WiFi router via USB, will I then be able to print to it directly, without any middleware? Comments appreciated – thanks!

  55. Annie says:

I am assuming this cool trick only works if you have wifi connecting all your devices. Unfortunately the only Internet access we have at home is via out phones, which we then turn into mobile hotspots in order to get Internet on our home Mac, iPad, etc. any suggestions on an app that will allow me to print to my non-air Canon laser printer using only my iphone 5?

    • Toni Magni says:

you should be able to print from the iPhone, when the iPhone is in Hotspot mode, as it should be able to see the Mac and print to it.

When you are offline and want to print, you need a local hotspot, such as the Airport Express, or any cheap-o WiFi router. Doesn’t have to be the latest model, as it will just serve you to connect the iOS devices to the Mac. You should be able to get one on eBay for $10 or so.

In both situations, though, the Mac to which the printer is connected must be on in order for this really cool App to work.

  57. Dave says:

    Is there a PC version?

  58. Royston says:

You would think Apple would do the obvious and get this sorted !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No wonder Samsung are getting ahead ?
Same with the picture capture and orientation

    Bad Apple !

  59. sam says:

Samsung (android) is more limited than iOs-devises and you need to use googles webprint or hp eprint which ios can use too.
There is NO direct wireless printing but you can buy software to do that…

Can I print from my iPad to a hp photosmart c6380 all in one wireless printer or do I need a special app?

  63. Mary Lynn says:

I have a mini iPad and I purchased a canon pix a mg3220. I set the printer up but my iPad is still not finding it when I push print. Should I send the canon back?
It was advertised as compatible with an iPad but must be connected to the same IEEE802.11 wireless LAN platform. I’ve no idea what that means. The connection outlets or USB cords are to big to insert in my iPad.

  64. Jared says:

You missed my personal favorite! Print Hub, which supports printing every filetype I’ve tried, has the option to connect to Dropbox, lets me edit photos before printing and best of all, it’s only $0.99!

I’m REALLY angry at the MISLEADING tag line/headline saying “How to print
From ANY printer from your I devices” – as I’ve been searching for fixes as to print
to the printers I already have!!

How to print: Copy everything you type into the body of an email & send to a
Computer that has word docs that can be easily printed. It’s better to take a few
Extra minutes than be forced to buy a printer due to Apples selfish greed!

I am not a about to indulge Apple’s insane greed
By getting a specialty printer. I’ve been a loyal customer for years- & having my
New IPhone 5 not be able to use any of the accessories I have because of the
smaller charge port- & forced to buy all new stuff- & now a printer!?!?! What’s next!?
I’m ready to switch to Samsung- cheaper, all products equally
interchangeable & they aren’t blood thirsty greed monsters.

  66. Carlos says:

WOW! Thankyou it worked great with my new Brother DW2270. First I set up my printer to work on the WIFI. Then I set up AIr Print activator. Very easy. Took less than 5 min. Thanks again. My Brother DW2270 is not supposed to “Air Print”(from mobile devices), only wireless print to my desktop. With this program I now am able to “Air Print” from my Iphone. Very handy. I use Iphone 5, and print from Invoice2go. That’s all I need to run my buisness. I used to print from an “Air Printer” Epson NX430 inkjet, it worked great but the ink is expensive ( before i found cheap ink at Amazon “wink wink”). I always used a Brother printer before my epson, but then I needed an Air Print printer so I got the Epson. Now I am happy to be able to print inexpensively from a Brother Laser.

  67. silvia tripodi says:

I need a printer that would allow me to print from home to my office 30 km away. Does airprint offer that function? I usually buy Dell printers not sure if they have?

  68. John says:

    What is the deal here??
I used to be able to print from my iPad!
    Why not now?
Just another way to extract more money out of consumers!

  69. Rick says:

I used to be able to print from my IPad to my HP printer before I downloaded the iOS 7. So would I be better off uninstalling this useless upgrade?

  70. Mike says:

I can print from my G4 iTouch to my WiFi equipped HP printer with no problem, no Air print, airport, Air Supply or anything else as far as I am aware. My new iPad Mini with Retina display gizmo can’t do this. Like I’m going to buy a new Air Print equipped printer? Not likely! Nor am I going to set up my Mac Power book as an intermediary, assuming I understand the above discussion correctly.
If my iTouch can print without this hassle, why can’t the iPad. Is this another “Apple” quirk?
Venting solves little, but can be rather therapeutic, I guess.

  71. Liz says:

Anyone got the free link for AirPrint Activator for Windows 64bit that they can post for the rest of us? Have trawled the internet in vain – like many others, no doubt – only to find info about how wonderful it is but no actual download link on any site I’ve checked on! Even AirPrint Activator’s own site doesn’t have one! Thanks.

The only operating system that will not print directly. Now I have to pay to be able to do this. My windows and Linux pc’s, Android phone and tablet all do, but no not Apple products. Only have Apple due to the kids school. (Only run Windows due to work). Over priced money grabbers.

  74. Misleading! says:

Worked great, immediately. Then I saw developer’s misleading wording for it. It’s either free with a suggested donation, or simply charge for it. You don’t require payment and ask for donation. That’s crap. Just a way of getting out of taxes or not providing support. Wont’ use just for misleading, dishonest way of doing!

  75. Kfir says:

There is a free App from Canon which allows you to print from you iphone directly to your printer without any PC use.
